Sambodi Chaithya
The 261 feet tall Sambodhi Chaithya, a space rocket-like Buddhist stupa that sits atop two giant arches, is located in the Colombo harbor area. The shrine was built in a way that could be seen by anyone closing into the Port of Colombo by sea.
Sambodi Chaithya
A historically iconic landmark
Designed by renowned Sri Lankan engineer A. N. S. Kulasinghe, construction began in 1956 to commemorate the Sambuddhatva Jayanthi. The stupa is placed high above Marine Drive at the entrance to Colombo Harbour, on a platform supported by two interlocking arches. After the construction of the stupa, the main route leading to the harbour was renamed Chaithya Road. The tower is connected to the platform below the stupa via a metal walkway.
